Indus OS may not be familiar to India’s urban dwellers. But the mobile operating system, which is based on Google’s Android, simplifies and translates the phone’s functions, making it userfriendly for the millions who are not fluent in English. The company says over 8 million phones run on it. It started off with a tie-up with local phone maker Micromax but in the last two years has added half a dozen others. The firm hopes a surge in demand for smartphones will help realise its ambition to run on 1 billion phones in India.
