Agarwal, an IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, joined OnePlus in 2014 as its first employee in India. Under his watch, India has emerged as the biggest market for OnePlus in the past two years, with a third of its users from India. The Shenzhen-based smartphone maker pipped Samsung and Apple in calendar year 2018 sales of premium smartphones priced above `30,000, according to analytics firm Counterpoint Research. Its R&D centre in Hyderabad will be its biggest in the next three years, showing how important India is in OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau’s scheme of things. Agarwal, a small-town boy from Uttar Pradesh, often considered following his peers to try his luck in Silicon Valley. But he wanted to do something in India that would have the potential to create a broader impact on the ecosystem and generate employment. With OnePlus, he believes he has got the chance to do just that.
