Indian Chemical Council (ICC), the apex national body of chemical companies in India, has teamed up with Intel India to identify the digital future needs of the chemical industry and to improve standards of chemicals transportation fleets.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between ICC and Intel India to improve the safety and operational efficiency of chemical transport fleets. It will leverage best-in-class safety technology like an advanced driver assistance system, say ICC sources.
The chemical industry is one of the fastest growing industries for decades now and more than 80,000 chemical products of both hazardous and non-hazardous are being transported over the length and breadth of the country. The logistics sector in India is yet to have global standards, as the policies and regulations are still evolving, says Ravi Goenka, President of the Indian Chemical Council (ICC).
"Now it is the responsibility of the chemical industry to take up the accountability in developing standards, processes and practices and identify responsible stakeholders to operate it sustainably. Establishing formidable policies will help in safeguarding and operating in the long run," he says.
As part of this, ICC has launched 'Nicer Globe,' a sustainability initiative for enabling chemical industry with global standards, infrastructure and services for safe and secure transportation. Nicer Globe is presently offering technology based solutions to the chemical logistics through tracking and tracing, journey risk management and onsite emergency response to its members.
India's over $200 billion chemical industry is experiencing unprecedented growth on the back of the consumption economy, niche products, rapid import substitution, and a global geostrategic demand shift from China.
