States need to agree on GST rate on petrol, diesel: FM

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the enabling provision for inclusion of petrol and diesel into GST is already present in the GST Act and it is up to the states to agree upon the applicable tax rate. “Proviso for inclusion of petrol and diesel under GST is already present in the Act. For petrol and diesel, law has already been embedded. In the Council, the states have to decide what will be the rate of taxation. Once they decide, it will be put in the Act. The intent of the Central government even as the GST was implemented was that eventually at some time, petrol and diesel could be brought under GST,” Sitharaman said while briefing media on the decisions taken by the GST Council.
