A top-of-class performance in a testing year for banks was almost overshadowed by the rare extension of Bhattacharya's term. The extension would ensure the smooth merger of associate banks with SBI. Pushed by then RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, banks underwent an asset quality review late in 2015, resulting in severely dented profits from a multifold increase in provisioning. Despite its heft, SBI seemed least hit, for which Bhattacharya can take much of the credit. Her focus on credit monitoring and recovery included wriggling out of potentially dodgy deals such as a $1 billion loan to the Adani group.
