Kochhar’s focus on leveraging the demand for retail loans to increase margins helped ICICI Bank breach the profit after tax mark of Rs 10,000 crore in FY14, making it the first Indian private sector bank to reach that milestone. A lot of that demand came from rural India. Under Kochhar’s watch, the bank has brought more than 18.5 million unbanked people into banking and processed about 5 million domestic migrant remittances. Kochhar doesn’t just want to tap the credit needs of the rural economy; she wants to do that with the latest advancements in digital banking. ICICI staff use tablets to speed up account opening and loan processing at the customers’ doorstep, especially in areas not covered by the branch network. As the economy shows signs of a turnaround, Kochhar is pushing her corporate loan book again after many quarters.
