After spending 19 years at Kotak Investment Banking as an investment banker, when Nayar decided to become an entrepreneur in 2012, she picked an unusual business: online beauty product retailing. Many said niche verticals like beauty may find it hard to survive as horizontal players were also offering such products, albeit in a limited way. Unfazed, Nayar started Nykaa in 2012 and today it is India’s largest online beauty retailer with revenues of ₹578 crore in 2017-18, up 170% over a year. Nykaa was Ebitda positive in the last reported quarter and expects to remain so through the financial year.
