CEO and Co-founder, Multiples Alternate Asset Managementage: 55
The past year has been an interesting one for Ramnath and Multiples. The ‘$1 billion AUM’ (assets under management) tag apart, she has returned 82% of the principal to investors in its first fund thanks to seven exits out of 11 investments in the first fund. Her second fund (for $700 million) has already made seven investments, with an average investing ticket size of $50 million. Ramnath plays a strategic role in her portfolio companies to script definite success stories. Earlier this year, Multiples sold its 8.16% stake (worth close to Rs 478 crore) in multiplex chain PVR. Private equity biggie Warburg Pincus acquired a 14% stake (from Multiples and other entities) for a whopping Rs 820 crore. This meant Multiples could deliver handsome returns, as the exit is estimated to have provided an internal rate of return of close to 50%. Ramnath is exploring new opportunities around stressed assets as well as building capability for technology investment practices. In April, Ramnath became chairperson of the Tata Communications board; she has been an independent director since 2014. It’s a non-executive role, but is important because she becomes the first woman professional to chair a Tata board.
