As a Bollywood agent, it’s business as usual to get the stars big endorsements, lucrative public appearance, contracts, and advise them on the right movies. But managing an A-lister with a bad boy image and making him the darling of the masses in a world where porcelain egos and megabucks rule the day, requires an iron will and nerves of steel. Shetty’s ethos on managing stars is simple: “Build the client’s trust, reputation, and wealth.” In recent years, she’s done that with Salman Khan, who’s delivered three box office hits: Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010), and Bodyguard (2011). Shetty also represents two of the biggest female stars, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. “As a celebrity management firm, we believe the spotlight should be on the (celeb) and not on the manager,” says Shetty, who’s averse to interviews. But she’s always surprised to read what the media reports on her. Not bad for a college dropout who started a model-management company called Models Plus in 1994 and merged it with Matrix in 2001.
