First, the numbers. Swati Piramal’s company grew to Rs 4,520 crore in revenues last fiscal, with a post-tax profit of Rs 2,862 crore. But her keen interest in molecular imaging led to a milestone. Piramal Imaging’s Neuraceq (florbetaben F18 injection), used for brain imaging to evaluate cognitive disorders, was approved by the U.S. FDA this March, four weeks after receiving marketing authorisation from the European Commission. Piramal Imaging was started in 2012 after Piramal Healthcare (a group company) acquired worldwide rights to the molecular imaging R&D portfolio of Germany’s Bayer Pharma. In her spare time, Piramal is enthusiastic about greening the earth. Last Christmas, she created 20 musical gardens. This year, she hopes to use tissue culture to propagate and conserve rare orchids from the Sahayadris.
