TVS Motor will launch electric motorcycles: Sudarshan Venu
TVS Motor managing director Sudarshan Venu says the company will make electric motorcycles including an electric Norton. "It is still early days for EVs at 5% industry volumes. Scooters in urban areas have been an obvious choice for companies to invest in. Going forward, it will come. It’s a question of time," Venu tells Fortune India in an interview.
Form factors and products with electric powertrains will come in all categories whether it is scooters, motorcycles or three-wheelers, says Venu. "Naturally, there have been more electric scooters selling because that is what consumers want and more of our launches are in that direction. But I think it can come in other form factors as well," says Venu.
“We will definitely make electric motorcycles on our own. We will have the complete product range from e-bikes, electric scooters, motorcycles, electric Norton and three-wheelers. We will have the full stack like we have in ICE. Electric is a huge investment area so we will have a full family of models which will be launched. You have already seen some, more will come. There will be other new products for different countries based on the form factors in those countries," Venu says adding that a lot of technology, software, connectivity, motors and controllers are being developed in-house at TVS.
The TVS Motor MD says there is room for CNG-powered two-wheelers as well. "CNG is an interesting option. We already have a CNG three-wheeler. We will explore more," he says.
