Tech behemoth Google Inc announced on Tuesday that its AI assistant Gemini app is now accessible for Android users in India, supporting English, Hindi, and eight other Indian languages. iPhone users will soon have access to Gemini through the Google app in the coming weeks, as mentioned in a blog post by Amar Subramanya, vice president of Engineering for Gemini Experiences.
Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, shared via X, "Exciting news! Today, we're launching the Gemini mobile app in India, available in English and 9 Indian languages. We’re also adding these local languages to Gemini Advanced, plus other new features, and launching Gemini in Google Messages in English."
Gemini, Google's AI assistant, has garnered significant interest in India in its inaugural year. Subramanya noted in the blog post that individuals ranging from students to developers have embraced Gemini's capabilities to boost productivity, learning, and creativity in their daily lives.
“To access Gemini on Android, download the Gemini app or opt-in through Google Assistant. You can then use Gemini by corner swiping, hitting the power button on select phones, or saying ‘Hey Google’,” the blog post states.
Furthermore, the users of Gemini Advanced in India can now access features from Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google's latest AI model. The Gemini app is now live in India, supporting English and nine Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. This app empowers users to type, speak, or even upload images for assistance, as per the blogpost.
For instance, users can snap a photo of a flat tire to receive instructions on changing it or seek help in crafting a perfect thank-you note, it states.
The enhanced capabilities of Gemini Advanced enable users to upload and receive quick summaries, feedback, and actionable insights from multiple large documents and emails. This functionality is particularly useful for tasks such as analysing complex data through spreadsheet uploads, where Gemini Advanced can clean, explore, analyse, and visualise data, presenting it as interactive charts and graphs.
“Upload multiple large documents, up to 1,500-pages total, or summarise 100 emails. Gemini Advanced can then provide quick summaries, personalised feedback, and actionable insights, saving you time and boosting your productivity. Now you can quickly get answers and insights about dense documents, like figuring out the details of the pet policy in your rental agreement or comparing key arguments of multiple long research papers,” the blog post states.
“Tackle complex data analysis tasks by uploading your spreadsheets (Google Sheets, CSVs, Excel). Gemini Advanced can now clean, explore, analyse, and visualise your data, transforming it into interactive charts and graphs, it adds.
Regarding privacy, Subramanya emphasised that user files remain private and are not utilised to train Google's models. Google also mentioned that the Gemini feature will be integrated into Google Messages on specific devices.
In February 2024, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a former Union minister, cautioned the major tech company regarding the responses generated by its latest AI model, Gemini AI, concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
