Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta announced a three-part layoff round in March 2023 after firing around 11,000 employees in November last year
Last month, Amazon announced that the company will be trimming 9,000 more positions in the next few weeks, mostly in AWS, PXT, Advertising, and Twitch.
Google cut its total workforce by about 12,000 in January, about 6% of its total workforce, of which 450 employees were affected in India
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls it a “tough decision” with no way around that. Social media firm to also not fill 5,000 open vacancies.
Meta has as many as 400 employees in India, and is one of the most profitable markets of the company with more than 200 million users of WhatsApp and Instagram.
This is the first and the largest layoff in the social media company’s history of 18 years. Meta has also decided to extend the hiring freeze through the first quarter.
The development comes days after the company posted weak quarterly results.
