Sama hit the headlines last June when redBus.in, a bus ticketing website he co-founded, was snapped up by South African media and e-commerce conglomerate Naspers for $135 million. The acquisition has larger implications for the software brands that co-founders Sama, Charan Padmaraju, and Sudhakar Pasupunuri developed. BOSS for bus operators and SeatSeller for bus inventory distribution can use Naspers’ reach and networks to enter new markets such as Brazil, Southeast Asia, and China. (Naspers wields enormous influence in the BRICS nations, with 52% revenue from its Internet properties.) Primary investors in redBus got a high return, the company is well capitalised, and Sama is in the driver’s seat.
