Edtech players ruled 2020 as the pandemic pushed students and teachers to online education in droves. Unacademy’s business grew almost tenfold, helped by innovations such as remote studios for teachers, and products like live interactive classes, and one-on-one doubt clearing solutions. Their test prep business, especially for competitive exams, performed exceptionally, ballooning to ₹120 crore this May from ₹2 crore in the first month after its launch in 2019. The company is targeting a $100-million annual revenue run rate in its K12 segment. It plans to expand its test prep categories and improve its notes and assignment content, which it believes isn’t the best-inclass yet. With the demand came the funding. The Bengaluru-based startup raised more than $260 million over three rounds last year from investors such as SoftBank, Facebook, General Atlantic, Tiger Global Management, and Dragoneer Investment Group. It became the second Indian edtech company after Byju’s to enter the unicorn club. The $2 billion-valued startup has come a long way from 2010 when Munjal uploaded tutorials on a YouTube channel.
