Car sales remained flat in April 2024 with 3.38 lakh vehicles getting despatched to dealers during the month compared with 3.32 lakh in the same month last year. Of these, Maruti Suzuki clocked wholesales of 1.37 lakh units, cornering a market share of 40.8%.

Retail sales of passenger vehicles grew 9.8% year-on-year to 3.14 lakh last month. Of this, India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki announced retail sales of 1.19 lakh units, 18% year-on-year growth compared with April 2023.

Maruti’s total sales rose 4.7% to 1.68 lakh units in April. Sales of mini segment cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, declined 18% to 11,519 units compared with 14,110 units in April 2023. Sales of compact cars, including Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S and WagonR, also fell to 56,953 units last month over 74,935 units in the year-ago month. Utility vehicles, consisting of Brezza, Ertiga, S-Cross and XL6, clocked sales of 56,553 units last month from 36,754 units earlier.

Hyundai Motor India registered total sales of 63,701 units last month, posting a growth of 9.5%. Domestic sales grew 1% year-on-year to 50,201 units in April compared with 49,701 units in the same month last year. Exports jumped 59% to 13,500 units.

 “In April 2024, Hyundai Motor India achieved fourth consecutive month of 50,000 plus units in domestic sales during CY 24. Driven by models like the Creta, Venue and Exter, SUVs continued to be a growth driver contributing 67% of HMI domestic sales,” says Tarun Garg, chief operating officer, Hyundai Motor India.

Tata Motors shipped a total of 47,983 units in April 2024, up 2% year-on-year compared with 47,107 units in the same month last year. India’s largest electric carmakers EV sales fell 2% year-on-year to 6,364 units in April as against 6,516 units in the same month last year.

Japanese carmaker Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) continued to strengthen its growth trajectory by recording a consistent increase in its monthly sales units. The company today announced that 20,494 units were sold in the month of April 2024, representing a Y-o-Y growth of 32%, as compared to April 2023, where the company sold 15,510 units. The growth momentum was sustained despite a weeklong maintenance shutdown from April 06-14, 2024, for the upkeep of machinery and equipment to sustain operational efficiencies, productivity and safety. In the current month, domestic sales accounted for 18,700 units while exports totalled 1,794 units during the same month.
