Sales of tractors may have slowed last year, but the 25% market share that Chennai-based TAFE controls means that it’s still easily the second-largest player in India. The company’s focus on the 40hp to 50hp segment is evidently paying off. Srinivasan, who is a board member of companies such as Tata Steel and Tata Global Beverages, says she doesn’t “believe in either giving up or taking competition for granted”. In a recent interview, Srinivasan had said the company would soon start manufacturing farm equipment (harvesters, tillers, etc), and claimed that it would launch one product every quarter. This will help round off TAFE’s portfolio, which now includes, apart from tractors, diesel engines, auto components, batteries, and transmissions.
