Competition has been brisk in the past year, with rivals P&G and Hindustan Unilever ramping up Pepsodent and Closeup, respectively. But with 4.6 million retailers and a share of over half the market, Parameswaran has ensured that Colgate held its own. In the past year, its market share in toothpastes grew 5% to 57%, and revenue from Rs 3,224 crore to Rs 3,757 crore. According to Colgate, more than 300 million consumers don’t use toothpaste, and you can bet that Parameswaran’s going after them. Colgate put up a stall at the last Kumbh Mela; it drew almost 8 lakh visitors. Swachh teeth?
