Last year, many states banned cab aggregators, reacting to the alleged rape of an Uber passenger in Delhi. A year later, Uber claims to have 250,000 cabs, “up from a fraction of it” when Jain joined. After intense lobbying by aggregators, including Jain, there has been a regulatory victory too. The government has agreed to classify cab apps as on-demand transport aggregators, not taxi services. Last year, the San Francisco-based company committed to invest $1 billion in India, even as it raised funds from Mumbai-based Tata Opportunities Fund.
